LIGO-IndIGO Summer Students Program

LIGO Laboratory at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) hosts a 10-week summer student research program every year, called the LIGO SURF Program . The program is supported by the US National Science Foundation . In order to support the LIGO-India project, LIGO has graciously agreed to host a few talented and motivated undergraduate students from Indian institutions, pre-selected by IndIGO, as part of this program.

The program encourages undergraduate students to participate in the development of gravitational-wave astronomy through the LIGO Project. Selected students will work on summer research projects either at the Caltech campus in Pasadena, California or at the LIGO Observatory sites in Washington or Louisiana. The program runs from June 18 through August 23, 2019. Considering the fact that the summer vacation period in major Indian undergrad institutions start early, LIGO/Caltech has agreed to host the Indian students during the period May 15 - July 30, 2019. Please only apply to the program if you are able to attend on the indicated dates. The dates are non-negotiable.

Please consider the following points before applying:
  • Particular emphasis will be given on experimental projects; see here a list of available projects. Previous research experience in good experimental research projects, proven academic track record and demonstrated willingness for hardwork will be highly valued.
  • The projects are mainly related to experimental physics, and may contain some aspects of mechanical, electrical, control-system, and software engineering. However, this is NOT an appropriate program for other aspects of engineering (such as civil, chemical or biological engineering).
  • The program runs during a fixed time period, and allows very little flexibility regarding the dates. Please apply only if you will be able to attend the program during these fixed dates.
  • This is a highly competitive program. We receive 300-400 applications from India from which only 2 or 3 are selected. Also, the research projects can be quite demanding — requiring strong background, motivation and hardwork. Before applying, please consider whether you have a serious chance of success. Please apply only if you have sufficient background and interest in the area. Please do not submit generic applications.
If you think you satisfy all the criteria mentioned above, please apply using the online application form given below. Application deadline is 1 Feb 2019. Please also ask two referees to to send recommendation letters directly to ligosurf (at) gw-indigo (dot) org before the deadline.
